The Rotary Club of Millpoint (RCMP) is keen to support the building of a second girls’ dormitory – Kathryn’s Dorm  – in a remote part of Northern Laos.  Kathryn’s Dorm commemorates the life of Ms Katie Benwell who had visited Laos as a volunteer graduate teacher with Global Hand Charity (GHC).  Visiting Laos had profound effect on Katie but, sadly, 6 months later she died suddenly from a meningococcal infection contracted while travelling in Europe.  Katie’s family donated funds for the construction of the first dormitory – Katie’s Dorm – to house 60 teenage girls in Luang Prabang.  RCMP is working with GHC and a locally based builder to construct this second dormitory at the Middle School at Phou Luang.

The dormitory, 5 hours out of Luang Prabang, will provide a safe space in an extreme rural location for ethnic girls between 9-13 years old therefore giving them the opportunity to attend secondary school.  Because of the dire need for safe accommodation we are asking donors to “purchase some high-rise real estate” in the form of beds and bunk space.   Building has begun, but a total of $56,000 Australian is needed.  At $500 Australian per bed (or $1000 Australian per bunk) we are urging Rotary clubs and friends of Rotary from around the globe to support this worthy project.

Current housing for the girls looks like this.  Note the open fire cooking inside the bamboo hut and dirt floor.  Would you want your teenage daughter living in conditions like this over a monsoon?

We want to see the girls housed in a robust accommodation unit like the one below with stable concrete floors and proper toilet facilities able to survive wet conditions and that will last at least 20 years.  The building deadline is completion by December 2015 before the monsoon season hits.
